Fr. Marty Devereaux spoke to us this evening about his experience
of the aftermath of the earthquake in Haiti.
He was personally touched by the tragedy. He is the campus minister
at Lynn university. Each year, a group of students volunteers to
visit one of the neglected countries in our hemisphere, usually
Jamaica or Haiti. Those who take part in these volunteer visits are
often changed for the rest of their lives.
This year the group was in Haiti at the time of the earthquake.
The hotel in which they were staying collapsed to rubble and four
students and two faculty members were killed. Eight other students
were not in the hotel at the time and were fine, with minor
injuries. Fr. Marty was called to help immediately after the
earthquake.
His description of the country in the wake of the disaster was
harrowing. But he emphasized that most citizens and those who
arrived from outside were generous and kind in helping the victims
and their families.
Fr. Marty Devereaux is a frequent visitor to the Abbey of Gethsemani
and we are grateful for his generosity to the community.
