Each year shortly after Ash Wednesday, the community takes a week-long retreat.
The industries shut down so that we have more time for lectio and private prayer,
and we are led by reflections given in morning and evening conferences by a
retreat leader. This year, somewhat unusually, our retreat was from Thursday
the 10th of March through Thursday the 17th.
We were fortunate to have Dom Gregory Polan, OSB lead our retreat.
He stressed the fact that our brokenness, our need for help, is in fact our
greatest asset as Christians. We cannot be self-sufficient, so we must depend
on God. This is our hope. Throughout his talks, he shared with us the insight
gained from many years of reflection on scripture. His readings of familiar
and not-so-familiar passages were unique and thougtful.
Dom Gregory is the abbot of Conception abbey in Missouri. He is a scriptural
scholar and much in demand as a retreat director. Rececently he has been
involved in a retranslation of the Grail psalter, which will become the standard
for the Church's liturgy of the hours, used by priests and many religious.
