With the distribution of ashes on March 6 - Ash Wednesday - the monks of Gethsemani joined the Church in transitioning to the holy season of Lent. The period of fasting and prayer is a time of preparation for the great celebration of Easter.

In addition to practicing greater abstinence from certain foods and increased silence, the brothers also dedicate more time to reading.

At Gethsemani, this is expressed in communal lectio divina in the mornings. In accordance with the Rule of St. Benedict, each monk also chooses a special book to read each evening throughout the season. The books were distributed after the weekly Chapter talk on the First Sunday of Lent.

May this holy time of silent preparation bring hidden graces to all.
