31 July, 2014 - Tibetan monks from India visit Gethsemani

On the 31st of July, the Abbey of Gethsemani was privileged to welcome a group of Tibetan Buddhist monks visiting from the Drepung Gomang monastery and school in Northern India.

They are about to embark on a fundraising tour of North America, from their base at the Drepung Gomang Institute and monastery in Louisville.

We walked together through the woods on the west side of Gethsemani's property and stopped at the group of statues depicting Christ's agony in the garden.  The monks gathered around the main statue of Christ and intoned a chant for world peace, written by the Dalai Lama.

We shared a lunch after our walk, well-seasoned with good conversation.

The Drepung Gomang Institute is located in Louisville Kentucky and is a functioning monastery.  It holds weekly meditation periods open to the public and hosts other events.  Most recently, they sponsored the vist to Louisville last year by the Dalai Lama.
